Susan Husari is from San Francisco. She started her career as a seasonal firefighter at Klamath National Forest in 1975 on a 20-person hand crew. She then became a hotshot crew member, helitack crew member, and engine operator on the Lassen National Forest from 1975 to 1987. 

Susan then worked at Everglades National Park until 1991, where she held several positions, including park Fire Management Officer.

From 1991 to 2002, she held multiple positions at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. These roles included Deputy Director of Fire and Aviation Management and Assistant Director of the Fuels Management Program.

Throughout her career, she worked in many incident management roles, including as a Fire Behavior Analyst. She also collaborated with fire scientists on many projects and publications.

In 2012, she retired as the Fire Management Officer for the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service. Since then, she has been a public member of the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection since 2014. During her time there, she chaired the Resource Protection Committee and co-chaired the Effectiveness Monitoring Committee for the Board.
