Pace of California wildfires in 2021 well ahead of disastrous 2020

This year’s increased wildfire activity, which has damaged or destroyed 91 structures, has been driven by hot and dry conditions, Cal Fire said this week. The entire state is in the grip of drought, much of it classified as extreme or exceptional. After a dry winter and early heat waves, the landscape is covered in extremely dry vegetation. Two of the three large wildfires burning for more than a week in the state’s far north were more than 70% contained Wednesday while the stubborn Salt Fire north of Redding was 25% surrounded. A big fire in northern Los Angeles County was 88% contained.

Three dead as wildfires blaze on southern Turkish coast

MANAVGAT, Turkey, July 29 2021 (Reuters) – Three people died in a forest fire in southern Turkey on Thursday where authorities were battling multiple blazes for a second day amid suspicions of arson, the country’s AFAD disaster agency and the agriculture minister said. Dozens of villages as well as some hotels were evacuated, and television footage showed burnt buildings and people fleeing across fields as firefighters on the ground and in helicopters tried to contain a blaze in Manavgat, 75 km (45 miles) east of the Mediterranean resort of Antalya. Officials have said that more than 60 wildfires have erupted across 17 provinces on Turkey’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts this week, with the presidency vowing to hold to account those responsible for the “attacks”. Of those wildfires, 36 have been contained, but firefighting efforts for the remaining 17 continue, with more than 140 people requiring treatment or suffering property damage, according to AFAD. Horse Park Fire Facilitated Learning Analysis

The Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center has added a new lesson sharing tool to their bag of tricks. Using the 18-minute video about the experiences of the two firefighters that were entrapped in one fire shelter on the 2007 Alabaugh Fire south of Hot Springs, South Dakota, they created a new training experience using a system developed by TED, called TED-Ed. The way it works is that you view the video, then answer or discuss 12 questions. In case you’re not familiar with TED, it is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

Wildfire preparedness tips

Every year, wildfires burn across the U.S., and more and more people are living where wildfires are a real risk. Nearly 45 million homes abut or intermingle with wildlands and more than 72,000 U.S. communities are now at risk. But by working together residents can make their own property – and their neighborhood – much safer from wildfire.
Before a wildfire threatens your area…
In and around your home

  • Clear leaves and other debris from gutters, eaves, porches and decks. This prevents embers from igniting your home.
  • Remove dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch, and within 10 feet of the house. Learn more about the basics of defensible space on the Firewise website.
  • Screen or box-in areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent debris and combustible materials from accumulating.
  • Remove flammable materials (firewood stacks, propane tanks) within 30 feet of your home’s foundation and outbuildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, don’t let it touch your house, deck or porch.
  • Wildfire can spread to tree tops. Prune trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground.

Forest fires in Canada– safety information for homeowners.

While forest fires can be dangerous to people and property, being prepared in advance and knowing what actions to take can better protect you. By law, you cannot have an outdoor fire in a Restricted Fire Zone. This includes all campfires and burning grass and debris. There may be exceptions to the ban on outdoor fires in a Restricted Fire Zone if strict criteria are met. Refer to the Outdoor Fire Restrictions for more information. Your municipality or municipal fire department may also have a fire ban or restrictions in addition to the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources Restricted Fire Zone. Please check for any further restrictions on open air burning in your area. For more information on forest fires and your safety, visit the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Take Steps to Lower Risk of Damage

In 2016, over 67,000 wildfires were reported across the US. In total, the wildfires destroyed over 4,000 structures. 3,000 of the structures destroyed were residential. As commercial and personal real estate development expands into forests and grasslands, the odds of wildfire related property damage goes up. You can’t fight back a wildfire that is encroaching on your home or business. However, you can take steps to protect it and evacuate when necessary. Learn how you can help protect your home or business from a wildfire. Keep you and your family safe and know how and when to evacuate.

Rare nesting stork hatches eggs as wildfire burns in Russia

A surveillance camera overlooking an endangered oriental white stork nest in Russia’s Far East captured a scene of a wildfire spreading in a field on April 28. The fire went by without doing any harm to the birds. The camera was installed at a power pylon as a part of World Wildlife Fund Russia project to monitor the stork family online.

A Study on Forest Fire Occurrence in China

it is very interesting to compare methods and techniques between different countries. We see many similarities and many differences. Can you spot equipment that the Chinese firefighters are using in this video that no one else uses? In May 1987, a conflagration killed 213 persons, burned 1,330.000 hectares (3,286.385 acres) in Daxingan Mountains, in the northeastern part of China, damaging 870.000 hectares (2,149.770 acres) of forest area, 10.081 homes in 3 towns, and much equipment.
