Susan Husari is from San Francisco. In 2012, she retired as the Fire Management Officer for the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service. Since then, she has been a public member of the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection since 2014. During her time there, she has chaired the Resource Protection Committee and co-chaired the Effectiveness Monitoring Committee for the Board. Earlier in her career, from 1991 to 2002, she held multiple positions at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. These roles included Deputy Director of Fire and Aviation Management and Assistant Director of the Fuels Management Program.

Husari worked at Everglades National Park from 1987 to 1991, where she held several positions, including Park FMO. Additionally, she also worked at Pinnacles and Joshua Tree National Monuments.
Husari was a hotshot crew member, helitack crew member, and engine operator on the Lassen National Forest from 1976 to 1981. Before that, she started her fire career as a seasonal firefighter at Klamath National Forest in 1975 on a 20-person hand crew. Throughout her career, she worked in many incident management roles, including as a Fire Behavior Analyst. Moreover, she also collaborated with fire scientists on many projects and publications.
